Tips to Avoid Pedestrian Accidents

gosankolaw • Aug 27, 2020

According to the CDC, in the year 2017 alone nearly 6,000 pedestrians were killed in traffic accidents in the U.S. At greatest risk for these accidents are elderly adults age 65 and older, or children under the age of 15. Most of these pedestrian accidents occur in urban areas in non-intersection locations and are also more likely to occur at night. Since pedestrians are much more vulnerable in an accident than the driver of a vehicle, it is important for both pedestrians and those who drive vehicles to understand how to prevent these accidents and ensure the safety of those who are walking in urban areas.

For Pedestrians

Perhaps one of the most important safety rules for pedestrians is to cross the street at a designated crosswalk or crossing area and obey all signals located there. This makes it easier for drivers to anticipate your presence as you cross the street. Be sure to walk in areas that are well-lit, especially at night, and carry a flashlight or wear reflective clothing. Walk on the sidewalk rather than in the road, and if there is no sidewalk, walk on the shoulder facing the oncoming traffic. Do not walk with earphones or earbuds in place or while texting or engaging in other distracting activities.

For Drivers

To avoid hitting pedestrians, those who are driving must be sure to follow all speed limits, especially in areas where there are schools or in residential neighborhoods. Young children may suddenly dart out in front of your car, so it is best to be prepared. Always yield to pedestrians who are crossing the street at a crosswalk, and avoid distractions like smart phones so that you will be more likely to see a pedestrian who is crossing unexpectedly. Nearly half of all pedestrian accidents involve the use of alcohol or drugs, so don’t drive under the influence. Even some prescription medications can impair the judgment of a driver.
